History

Founded in 2002 as a University-wide center and based at the School of Criminal Justice, the Rutgers Center on Public Security (RCPS) offers a multi-disciplinary approach to the academic study and practical application of ways in which democratic societies can effectively address crime, terrorism and other threats to public security. This involves the prevention of, protection from, and response to natural or human-made events that could endanger the safety or security of people or property in a given area. In an unprecedented way, the RCPS engages all parts of the University and community agencies in exploring the needs and major consequences of heightened security.

Mission

The core mission of Rutgers Center on Public Security is to engage in innovative data analysis and information dissemination for strategic decision making and tactical action; To develop innovative and practical methods for research, evaluation, threat assessment, and crisis management; To improve public safety and security through scholarly inquiry, interdisciplinary collaboration, and applied research; To coordinate discussions and consultations across academic, professional, corporate and governmental agencies.

Media Relations

Members of RCPS are available to media for interviews on topics ranging from local crime trends to national and global security issues. Experts prefer to be consulted on areas in which they have specific background knowledge rather than general opinion. We will match our faculty and associates as closely as possible to the topic to insure the best possible interview.
